Student Visa

Thousands of foreign students come to the United States every year to pursue an education at one of the United States’ prestigious schools or one of the many specialized programs available across the country.

If you are a foreign student and wish to come to the United States to attend school full-time, you may qualify for a student visa. Spouses and children of foreign students may also qualify for a visa to accompany their family member to the United States for the length of their studies. The categories of student visas are:

F-1 Academic Studies.

F-2 Spouses and children of F-1.

F-3 Canadian or Mexican national academic commuter students.

M-1 Vocational students.

M-2 Spouses and children of M-2.

M-3 Canadian or Mexican national vocational commuter students.

As far as employment authorization, there are special provisions that allow F-1 students to work on campus during their first year of the program. After the first year, off-campus employment and the types of employment are restricted by the nature of the academic program they are attending. M-1 students can engage in practical training after they complete their program.  Both F-1 and M-1 students’ off-campus employment must be related to their area of study and must be approved prior to commencing.
