Exchange Visitors
Exchange visitor visas are also available for those who wish to participate in an educational and cultural exchange program. Approved programs are usually for the purpose of teaching, studying, observing, conducting research, consulting, receiving training, demonstrating special skills or to receive graduate medical education or training.
In order to obtain a J-1 visa for exchange visitors, one must be sponsored by an exchange program that is designed under the regulations of the U.S. Department of State. Spouses and children of exchange visitors may also qualify for a J-2 visa to accompany their family member for the length of their stay in the United States.
Many exchange visitors are allowed to work in the United States depending on the nature of their exchange programs. Employment is only authorized for exchange visitors under the terms of their specific exchange program.
