I-9 Compliance

Businesses employing foreign workers are required to verify that their employees are authorized to accept employment in the United States. This verification is done through the United States Customs and Immigration Services by submitting a form I-9 for each foreign employee that a company hires.

Many foreign nationals who have already been admitted as permanent residents (have green cards) are already authorized to work in the United States, however, that is not always the case and I-9 verification is still necessary. Other workers may need to apply for employment authorization, and an employer may choose to sponsor the application. Please see our links on “Employment based Green Cards” and “Temporary Workers” for different options for sponsoring a work visa for a foreign employee.
